No, not Turtle Club Master of Disguise...
This Master of Disguise.
This game I already knew was received with mixed critical reception from across the board. Here are some quoted opinions from people I am familiar with who I know can form their opinions well, kept anonymous:
"I love the Wario Land series. I have been waiting a long time for Wario Land 5. But since Master of Disguise was a pretty big disappointment, it pains me to think that it could actually be th 5th Wario Land! Could this be??"
"I don't want to get too crazy over it, since Master of Disguise was such a huge let-down, but I will keep tabs on it."
"Also, his games rock (except Master of Disguise, but that's just one)."
"Maybe this game won't fail like Master Of Disguise after all..."
"Master of Disguise's title screen theme was one of the only good parts about the game."
"Nobody cared about Master of Disguise, olol."
I said that last quote almost two years ago, by the way. These are all from your normal, message board going people. Imagine how the real critics thought about it if you never heard a verdict about it before.
But enough quotes. I bought this game today in search of some good deals at a local store, but I didn't want to leave empty handed, so I grabbed this "rare" game. Seriously, I got it $20 new, I was honestly surprised. For its price and obscurity (and its infamy), I decided to cash out on it.
I never looked very much thoroughly into the game via Mari0 Wiki, but I did know that it's a platformer not unlike Wario Land, and its main draw is the plethora of usable disguises that granted Wario various powers.
Wario Land: Shake It! was a mighty fine, underrated game. I have no real first hand experience with the previous Wario Land games, but at least I got a good impression of the Wario Land series through the Wii game. Master of Disguise is only related to these games in genre, and to be honest I'm just glad that it's nothing more than that.
MoD was developed by Suzak. A lot of their games aren't worth mentioning not so much because of reception, but they're mostly Japan-only games of rather unfamiliar names. To keep it simple, these guys worked on F-Zero: Climax and F-Zero: GP Legend. F-Zero! But in short, Suzak's track record is just uninteresting for the most part. And that just leads a more iffy foreshadowing on how good this game would be to me.
So I booted the game up shortly after I got home. I was multitasking by playing this game and doing my routinely things online, but I eventually concentrated on this game. The plot of the game is basically just Wario wanting to go rob riches inside television programs and become a great thief like this Count Cannoli guy or whoever. He goes into a closet for one minute and invents a Telmet that allows him to go into the television. This is the impression of the story I got after watching the intro twice.
Yeah, Count Cannoli.
Cannoli quickly becomes a major character in the game right in the first level where he loses his wand Goodstyle (an animate wand who has an uncanny resemblance to the Pringles mascot) to Wario and has little argumentative bouts to get it back. When Goodstyle speaks of this stone tablet that grants anyone whatever wish they desire, Cannoli retreats from trying to get his wand back from Wario to obtain this tablet and get his wand back through wishing. Goodstyle's precious to Cannoli because it's a family item that runs through generations, losing it forever would bring shame to his family line.
This is the gist of the story so far from what I understand, I'm on the second level, which are dubbed as "Episodes" to accommodate the television theme. Believe me, the dialogue isn't remotely interesting.
My main problem in these first impressions is that this game feels boring. The controls are awkward to say the least (you jump with Up, move/run with left and right, and crouch with down, and for lefties you use the ABXY buttons accordingly), touch screen usage feels tacky and unnecessary (you have to draw symbols on Wario to transform, which you do very constantly), and the worst part is that you must always go through a short half baked puzzle in order to get whatever's in the treasure chests, which is right now getting a little annoying. Admittedly, the puzzles so far are diverse, but they aren't exactly something you've never seen before. It just feels amateur.
In addition, I've found myself lost inside a level a few times already because I was unsure on how to progress or did not easily see or understand what the game wanted me to know to progress, even with the map on the top screen.
I would like to commend the 2D graphics and music, though. It's visually a nice looking 2D game, but it's nothing special.
I also like the boss music against Count Cannoli enough to say that this song is probably my favorite thing in this game so far.
I don't know. I feel as if I'm starting things off on the wrong foot, this game isn't going to be remembered by me so much even after I beat it, if I ever muster up the attention to do so. But now I can truly say that I can understand why people hardly ever talk about this game, it's just so uninteresting and...bleh. At least I'm liking it better than I did with Wario World.
And that ends my first impressions of this game. If I feel like adding stuff later, I will.
Did anyone else actually play this game, or am I just the only guy on this forum who has? I wouldn't be surprised if I really was, but I'm looking for anyone who shares my verdict in some way that this game...is not very good.
