The superintendent in a Rhode Island city has threatened to fire all 74 of Central Falls High School teachers after they couldn’t reach an agreement on a plan to fix the struggling school.
Superintendent Frances Gallo sent a letter to the state education commissioner on Friday asking for the teachers to be fired.
"We have to do what we have to do," Gallo said.
Gallo’s plan for fixing the school includes a longer school day and tutoring before and after school.
The teachers are part of a 330-member union that is fighting the firings. The union’s president said they are willing to negotiate the plan.
"There is nothing else to negotiate. Their letter to me was very clear that they don't agree with any of what I'm trying to do," said Gallo.
A vote will be held on the plan on February 23.
If the teachers are fired, they will finish the school year.

Pretty awesome story. Although, the superintendent and her plans seem to be a bitch... Discuss. Edit: According to the video on the site, by 'struggling', it means the graduation rate is 48%. That's...shit.

That Teachers Union's ego is too inflated. It's about time someone took some drastic action with them.

Jesus Christ.
You'll bear with me for a minute because I have some views on school that some consider... radical. (And not in the surfer dude sense) And most of this is pretty tangental to the subject. If there's a problem with kids learning it is nearly absolutely not the student's fault. Most teachers seem to be under the impression that if a student is not paying attention, you yell and fume in order to scare them straight. Students don't talk to their classmates because they just want to disobey. They talk to their friends because it's more interesting than whatever the teacher has to say. I think that, yes, students can try harder, but it is also true that teachers need to realize when they're making mistakes and fix them instead of just blaming the kids.
It comes back because this person's solution is "FIRE THEM ALL." Sometimes, there are better solutions in fixing your own ways.

Fire ALL the teachers? Where are they going to find 74 NEW teachers?
Lack of teachers will somehow fix the problem?

Fire ALL the teachers? Where are they going to find 74 NEW teachers? Lack of teachers will somehow fix the problem? OH MY... THE LOGIC HERE IS UNDENIABLE!!!!11!!! *explodes from logic* But really. I'm confused. How does this solve a problem that he created? I mean, the struggling school might not be his problem, but asking them to solve it is... well... just odd. He's superintendent. He should know the problem and the solution. >_> Why would he have his job if this wasn't the case...?

If you read the article/watched the video, you'd know she proposed solutions but the union denied all of them. So she wants to fire 'em.

Which still doesn't solve her problem. It only allows her to implement her own "solutions" which, if it wasn't painfully obvious, most people thought wouldn't help.

I think the main issue here is that that superintendent is ugly.

Geez...and while I do agree with Hungry, the thing is that it's rather difficult to make subjects interesting. Plus making anything interesting to a person can be highly individualized. There's also the fact that some teachers just don't care anymore too... I think the super could have come to a better conclusion than "Let's fire them all!"

I knew of two teachers who managed to make the subject interesting. One of them was loved by half of the school and hated by the other, but that one was a Physics teacher and trying to teach Physics in the "conventional" school method is incredibly dull and almost makes things more difficult. I actually think more people have a problem with the subject than the person but blame him anyway.
The other was generally loved for most of the year, had a clever method to get everyone to read a book, actively helped his students aim for their goals and prepare for college, and even had enough time for free time every day. Of course, this was most of the year. At the end of the year, he pulled out all the stops and started teaching advanced english for everyone to write on "perfect essay." As in, something to refer to in college as an example of a proper essay.
